Valentine was a man who married young couples in secret or people who were forbidden to marry. They discovered what he was doing and was put to death. After his death, Pope Gelasius declared February 14, Valentines Day. This happened around the end of the 5th century. people would give or send valentine letters or greetings. Valentine letters started to appear until 1400. There are many more ways to send a valentine to a loved one like gifts etc.
